In this article we will be covering the Friday the Thirteenth superstition that seems to be settled in numerous cultures and their folklores. Is it really an unlucky number?
Are you one of those people that salutes every time you see a single magpie, walks around a stooped ladder and cries like a baby if you accidentally smash a mirror?
What about Friday the Thirteenth?
Do you stay in bed all day long and remove all sharp objects from the house?
For many it’s just another day…
But there are sufferers of a disease known as friggatriskaidekaphobia.
I’m deadly serious – that is a real word…honest!
Friggatriskaidekaphobia and Paraskevidekatriaphobia are both terms used for people that suffer from fear of Friday the Thirteenth.
But why do these terms even exist?
Where does this fear of this special Friday date come from?
Let’s take a closer look…
Enter Common Folklore and Superstition…
A number of cultures actually believe that Friday, as a day, is unlucky enough in it’s own right…without having to add the unlucky 13 to the end of it!
The number thirteen really does get a hard time of things – the thirteenth floor is somewhere an elevator shouldn’t stop (and in some hotels it’s even ignored in the building setup!), the thirteenth person to sit at a table is said to be in extreme danger…
The list goes on, and on…
In superstition and folklore, Friday is meant to be a day you should not undertake a new venture or attempt an important task.
In times gone past, ships would be advised not to set sail on a Friday!
Some people believe this unlucky link could be attributed to executions being held on a Friday…
What do you think?
Incidences of The ‘Curse’

The Templar Grand Master Jacques de Molay and a team of his Templar Knights were caught by the French on Friday October the 13th, 1307. They then met a grizzly end by being tortured to death…
Not exactly a lucky date for that bunch!

Rapper Tupac Shakur was gunned down in Las Vegas, Nevada, on September the 13th, 1996.
Looking to the future – in April 2029, another Friday the Thirteenth falls…the same time as Asteroid 99942 (also known as Apophis) makes it’s close journey past the planet Earth. At this moment in time, NASA believes that it will get closer to the Earth than our own orbiting communications satellites…
