In this article we will be taking a look at the case of the so-called possession of Maria Talarico. Many paranormal enthusiasts consider this case to be the ONLY example of alleged possession that led to a formal legal judgment of murder…
The body of a local man named Giuseppe ‘Pepe’ Veraldi was found below the Morandi bridge in Catanzaro, Italy, on February the 13th, 1936.
The twisted carcass was in an extremely bad shape leading the police to believe that Veraldi had fallen from the bridge above. The recorded cause of death was severe damage to the head.
There were no signs of foul play so the investigating police force listed the death as a suicide.
Veraldi’s family were outraged at this conclusion – they believed that ‘Pepe’ would never consider killing himself, and was a happy enough individual.
Within months the apparent suicide was forgotten about by the public…until three years later…
In January of 1939, a young lady named Maria Talarico was taking a stroll across the the Morandi bridge when she suddenly felt the urge to stop at the point where Veraldi’s body was said to have fallen.
She walked over to the side of the bridge, and mysteriously collapsed to the ground.
Onlookers attended to Maria and decided that she was too weak to walk, and promptly carted her home.
Once home, Maria slowly came around – her family thought things were back to normal…until she opened her mouth and began to speak.
When she spoke a strange man’s voice came out of her mouth – this man claimed to be Giuseppe Veraldi and demanded that they go and get his mother.
A couple of family members quickly left for Mrs. Veraldi’s house and brought her back to witness the strange event.
When Veraldi’s mother finally arrived, Maria/Giuseppe told her that he had been murdered – it was not a case of suicide.
Unfortunately, Maria/Giuseppe did not name the culprits behind the murder.
Instead, Maria got up and ran out of the house…and didn’t stop until she reached the exact place under the bridge where Pepe’s corpse had fallen.
Her family members, and Veraldi’s mother, followed her to this spot.
Once she arrived – Veraldi’s mother apparently ordered the spirit of her son to leave this teenage girl’s body – he listened, a disappeared immediately.
When Maria ‘awoke’ she remembered nothing about the incident.
Veraldi’s mother decided to approach the local police with this new information, but of course – trying to convince a police force about the subject of possession…is a pretty hard task.
The mother then had to wait nine years before closure on her son’s murder – when she received a letter from one of Pepe’s former friends who was living in Argentina.
Guilt had finally got to this man – he admitted killing Giuseppe in a jealous rage over a common love interest. He claimed he was helped by three other men.
The police were finally brought back in and the case was re-opened. One of the culprits had already died…but the rest were tried and convicted for murder.
Maria went on to live a normal life, without any other paranormal incidents.
