The Capuchin Catacombs Mummies

The Capuchin Catacombs Mummies

In this article we will be taking a look at the mysterious Capuchin Catacombs mummies, one of which is a rather famous corpse of a young girl that they nicknamed ‘Sleeping Beauty’…

The Most Beautiful Mummy in The World

The Capuchin Catacombs lie silently in Palermo, holding a diverse selection of mummified corpses…and the most beautiful mummy in the world.

Why does this mummy stand out above the others?

Why do people and paranormal experts find it so fascinating?

Well, this beautiful mummy of a little girl…sometimes feels the need to blink at whoever is looking at her!

Rosalia Lombardo

When she was alive, the most beautiful mummy in the world was a little girl named Rosalia Lombardo. There’s not that much information on her life but what researchers can gather is that she died around the age of two, back in 1920.

There are rumours that she fell victim to pneumonia and never recovered.

The Master Craftsman

Rosalia Lombardo was apparently embalmed by Alfredo Salafia – a known master craftsman in his day. Many modern-day embalmers still insist that Salafia’s work is still better than anything they can manage with modern techniques.

But how could this Italian craftsman have reached this level of expertise over a century ago?

Well rumour has it that he learned his trade by studying the ancient Egyptian techniques of mummifying, therefore he left all the organs untouched inside the dead bodies he was working on.

The Blinking Girl

Many people are drawn to the mummified corpse of this little girl due to her innocence and the beauty Salafia has managed to capture in his work…but she is also known to blink at certain visitors.

The reports came through thick and fast, so the owners of the catacombs decided to set up a time lapse camera to see if they could catch this paranormal event.

They managed to catch her blinking – Through the camera frames they clearly witnessed the young girl’s beautiful blue eyes as she blinked.

The Capuchin Catacombs Mummies

There are numerous conspiracy theories linked to the blinking girl in the Capuchin Catacombs – most of them border on the side of the paranormal.

One interesting theory I read came from a man pointing out that the changing humidity in the Capuchin Catacombs was responsible for the eye movement in the girl’s mummy.

But, folklore in Palermo points to the fact that Rosalia’s spirit has been restless inside her mummified body now for nearly a century – the blinking is an indication that it want’s to get out and move onto heaven.
