The Eilean Mor Lighthouse Keepers

The Eilean Mor Lighthouse Keepers

What really happened to the Eilean Mor lighthouse keepers?

Were they the victims of alien abduction? Were they dragged through a wormhole into another dimension? Did they fall foul of local paranormal legends?

Or did they simply ‘do a runner’, and carry through an elaborate escape from their job?

Let’s take a closer look…

The Lighthouse Keepers

Eilean Mor is one of a group of uninhabited islands known as the Flannan Isles, located in Scotland. It is a lonely outcrop of land that is surrounded by jagged cliff faces, and a lighthouse stands on top of it’s main grass covered hill.

On December the 7th, 1900, three lighthouse keepers (Donald MacArthur, Thomas Marshall and James Ducat) landed on the island to start a fortnight long shift.

When they arrived at the shoreline, they were met by their superior – Robert Muirhead. The three workers, and their boss, then checked the island to make sure all the equipment and supplies were in order.

Before leaving the men to their two week shift, the Superintendent let them know that there had been severe problems with mist around the island over the previous week.

He then departed to leave the three men to their duties.

On the mainland, the coastguard service that ran the lighthouse, had a large telescope fitted so that they could keep an eye on Eilean Mor and it’s lighthouse.

If there was ever any trouble on the island, the lighthouse workers could simply signal to the mainland, and the telescope would pick up their call.

A couple of days after the Superintendent had left his workers on the island, the severe mist returned, making it impossible to zoom in on the lighthouse structure.

During the period of December the 7th to December the 15th, the lighthouse was only spotted on three separate occasions.

A passing ship did manage to catch a fleeting glimpse of the island structure, but they were amazed to find that it didn’t seem to be in working order!

The Deserted Isle

The boat that was booked to bring the men home after their two week stint, ended up having to be delayed until December the 21st, due to the bad mist conditions surrounding the island.

When it finally arrived, it’s crew noticed that the lighthouse flag was not flying. This flag was usually set to show the incoming boats that the lighthouse workers were prepared to row out and meet them.

The crew decided to row ashore and find out what was happening.

When they got to the lighthouse – they found it locked up. When they finally managed to break into the building, they discovered a meal sitting waiting on the table and the fireplace untouched.

The three lighthouse workers were nowhere to be found.

They then frantically searched through the lighthouse log records, and discovered that the final entry was made on December the 15th – a day after the mist cloud had hit the island.

Mother Nature?

The Superintendent eventually informed the public that mother nature had taken the lives of the three missing lighthouse workers…but not everyone went along with this theory…

He was convinced that a rogue wave had hit the island and swept all three men out to sea, where they drowned.

Mother Nature?

Conspiracy theorists believe that the island was/is a hot-spot for alien activity, and the men were abducted by UFO’s.

Some locals also believe that the island has a strange link to another dimension – a hidden wormhole that is linked to numerous paranormal events over the years.

  1. Who is the keeper now? Are they available to reply to questions?

On the other hand I heard a sad tale that maybe why it is inhabited and no one visits the isles. It could possibly be a small isles people visit I guess. A possible premise for a thriller movie which will give people intrigue as to what happened or is happening now.

    1. Hi there Padedayo!

I’m afraid I’ve got no idea – a lot of these systems work on an modern automated system, so I don’t really know if they have a lighthouse keeper now?

  2. Wow what a fascinating post about the disappearance of these lighthouse workers. One would hope they were just unhappy with their jobs and left for a better life. But I person feel that’s unlikely. I think it is possible they were swept out to see, although why would all 3 be in the same place at the same time in the middle of a fig for that to happen? I’m not sure what happened, but I do know that story’s like this are very entertaining if nothing else! Thanks, for sharing, Kenny

  3. What a strange and horrifying incident it was,  I do believe in Aliens and we tend to came across many stories of Aliens encounter with humans.

There is no reason not to believe in Aliens, but the incidents you mentioned seems very suspicious and definitely what you called as panoramic.

Honestly, you just can’t scientifically prove how these incidents happens, there is no logical explanation to these incidents.  But there is no denial that other than our Earth, there are many more living beings are there on other planets, we called them Aliens.

Aliens are more superior and more advanced than humans, and have much superior powers than humans.  Then why do you think Aliens would like to terrify or want to take over the Earth?

    1. Wow, there’s just too many questions in this to answer mate. Maybe you should check out a few of our articles in the UFO section of the site and see if you can find some answers!
