Joe Berini, his wife and two of her children from a former marriage moved into one of his ancestral homes in New England towards the end of the 70’s.
The house seemed like an ideal location for the family to peacefully evolve but unfortunately it came with a hidden history that would eventually drive them from their home in search of spiritual help…
The case become known as the Berini haunting.
The First Visitor
The first paranormal visitor the family encountered was that of a little girl one evening in May, 1979. Joe’s wife, Rose, heard the child declaring “Mama, mama, this is Serena.”
She immediately confronted Joe about this apparition but he had no idea who this girl could be – there was no recollection of a young girl named Serena in his family’s past.
Unfortunately Serena was not a spirit that brought a great deal of luck with her – quite the opposite really!
After her first visit their daughter Daisy had to go to the doctors to have her tonsils taken out. What should of been a routine operation turned into a bit of a nightmare.
Little Daisy’s heart actually stopped through complications during the process and she nearly lost her life. Serena’s visit and the near tragedy of Daisy did not go unnoticed in the Berini household.
On Serena’s second visit Joe’s elderly grandmother suffered from a severe stroke – she never recovered and passed away that cold November night.
Serena’s third visit was during the night when the family were asleep. She gently whispered something in Joe’s ear causing him to wake up abruptly.
He looked over to his wife and noticed she was choking violently in her sleep – he frantically shook her until she eventually woke up.
Once awake, Rosa told Joe that she had been having a nightmare that involved her ex-husband trying to strangle her.
The Little Boy in White
In March 1981, another child made an appearance to Rose. It was the spirit of a little boy dressed in white who seemed to be roaming through the upstairs hall.
The family were never really scared of this little boy – they later told researchers that they felt an overwhelming feeling of comfort whenever he was around.
Serena seemed to appear to the family whenever they needed warnings about impending tragedies, but this little boy simply seemed to be looking for something upstairs.
Joe followed the boy’s silent searches many times until he decided to tear up the floorboards in each of the upstairs rooms. He eventually found a medallion of the Virgin Mary.
Serena and Giorgio
Joe decided to contact some of the his elder relatives to try and find out what was behind these hauntings. He learned that his father, Carlos, had two younger siblings that had died in the house.
One of was a five year old girl named Serena and the other was an eight year old boy named Giorgio.
On one occasion Joe heard the spirit of the little boy whisper “My oldest brother is the only one who can help me” in his ear. This statement seemed to bring with it a change in the haunting.
For some reason this statement was the key that unlocked a frightening barrage of poltergeist activity.
Door and windows would open and slam shut, objects would be torn from family member’s hands and ornaments would fly through the air.
The family sought the help of their church and two local priests turned up to bless the house. This blessing seemed to quieten the spirits…but not for long…
A Minister of God
The blessing seemed to eventually wake something terrifying within the house – a male, hunch-backed figure with over-sized feet wearing a black cape.
This grotesque figure claimed to be “A minister of God” and seemed to be the root of all the severe poltergeist movements within the house.
He constantly lashed out at the two children and seemed to have Rose in his sights more often than not. He would yank her limp, sleeping body from bed and suspend her in the air before slamming her into the floor.
On one occasion Joe received an emergency phone call in work. He rushed home to find Rose crouched in the corner of their bedroom with the double bed being thrown from one wall to the other.
The Psychical Research Foundation
Enough was enough and the family temporarily moved out of the house. Once again they turned to the church for spiritual help.
This second exorcism seemed to do the trick and no paranormal activity has been reported there since.
Eventually the Berini family invited the Psychical Research Foundation to investigate their claims…

Back in December of 2005, in South Shields, England, a happy couple and their son were preparing for the Christmas holidays when some very strange disturbances began to happen in their home.
The couple decided not to include their family names in their report to protect their son (naturally), so for the sake of this article we will call them mum, dad and the son.
Lets take a closer look at the South Shields poltergeist…
The paranormal incidents started off very slowly – simple tapping within the walls and doors opening and closing by themselves.
Suddenly the activity began to snowball – tables and chairs would stack themselves into towers in different rooms and huge and heavy chests of draws would scrape across their living room floor.
At the time, the family reported that they never actually saw any of the furniture move by itself – but they could hear it happening.
By the time they got to the room involved the furniture had already made it’s new destination.
At this point both mum and dad realized that something supernatural was taking place in their house – even though they had not yet managed to spot any paranormal presence.
Next came the rather creepy toy incidents – it seems as though the son’s toy box got targeted by some sort of paranormal entity. Various toys would dance around the room and even turn themselves on.
Mum actually woke up one night when she felt a sharp pain against the side of her head. When she got up to investigate she found her son’s toy dog lying right next to her.
She was obviously scared – so she woke up her husband who sleepily laughed it off as nothing more than a weird dream she had experienced.
Within seconds another of her son’s toys flew across the room smacking her directly on the same side of her head. Both mum and dad were awake – and this was the first time they had actually seen the poltergeist activity in action.
But the entity had not finished with them on this night – it began throwing toy after toy at the couple who sat petrified in their bed.
They pulled the sheets up above their heads to act as a sort of shield against the flying objects – but something invisible inside the room was pulling the sheets right back down!
Suddenly dad screamed in complete agony and the barrage of flying objects stopped…
Mum turned to dad to find out what had made him scream in that manner and discovered 13 animal-like scratch marks across his back.
From this point onward the entity in the house seemed to target the son’s toys and use them to frighten the occupants.
Both mum and dad would frequently hear certain toys creating some sort of distant moan – it’s as if the poltergeist wanted the family to believe that the toys were alive in some way.
These freaky toy incidents were soon followed by horrible text messages on their phones informing them that they were ‘going to die today!’.
On closer inspection the couple realized that these messages were somehow being sent from their own home landline.
Mike Hollowell and Darren Ritson
The couple went down many paranormal investigative roots before ending up on the phone to Mike Hollowell and Darren Ritson – they agreed to look into their case.
At first, The paranormal investigators were more than a little skeptical but that didn’t last for long – they eventually witnessed all the activity the family members had described to them!
The longer Mike and Darren investigated the more intense the haunting got. Kitchen knives would be thrown at the two men and the toys would seem to direct angry voices right at them.
Mike and Darren eventually managed to come face to face with the entity that was terrorizing this innocent family.
They claim that:
“The entity walked slowly from the bathroom, across the landing into the bedroom. As it passed the door to (the son’s) room, it paused and stared at me. Its face, devoid of all features such as eyes, nose or mouth, was cold and menacing. It felt like it was burrowing into my soul. It was large – maybe two meters in height – and midnight black. It was a three-dimensional silhouette that just radiated sheer evil”
They eventually concluded that this entity had a problem with the father of the family – he seemed to be the only one that was targeted by these strange scratching frenzies.
Without warning – the poltergeist activity stopped during the final stages of Mike and Darren’s investigation.
If you have any thoughts or opinions on the South Shields poltergeist please leave them in the comment section below.
What are we looking at when we see a ghost? We often ask this question in regard to the spiritual nature of the manifestation before us.
What heavenly apparition or lost soul is making itself known to us?
The other side of this question is much more scientific, much more physical.
What material and physical matter are we looking at that is causing these shapes and movement?
Put more simply, what are ghosts made of?
There are many theories on the physical matter of ghosts, but there is some weight behind the idea of plasma…
There has been plenty of debate on the topic of ghosts and the scientific reasons for their activity. Then there are the tales of popular culture that get thrown into the mix.
There is a big difference between the green, slimy masses that can be physically handled by Ghostbusters and cartoon characters and the physical entities that we come across in real life.
The problem is that nobody is quite sure what they really are made of.
One of the words that commonly comes up is plasma. This is an important term because it is probably largely responsible for the lore of movies, yet is still the most probable suggestion.
It all comes down to what our interpretation of plasma is. When we think of plasma we think of blood plasma and ectoplasm; plasma is where ectoplasm came from.
In the movies, this meant a thick substance produced by ghosts in order to interact with the real world. This was a neat trick for visual storytelling, but this is not the reality of ghost encounters.
The other definition of plasma is a fourth state of matter that is neither a solid, liquid or gas. It is essentially an ionized gas, unlike the gases we are familiar with, with highly energized electrons that have separated from their nuclei.
We see this phenomenon when looking at neon lights and it is believed that this form of matter is what creates the energized glowing entities that we see as ghosts.
Our ongoing lack of understanding could simply be down to the fact that this particular form of plasma is separate from that of neon gas.
There could be physical and chemical interactions taking place within these spectral projections that are yet to be fully understood.
Energy and electricity are the key here, which is what makes this subject so complex…
Plasma, of one kind or another, seems like the most logical solution here because of that idea of a highly energized being.
We know for certain that energy is a major factor in the appearance and characteristics of ghosts.
The glowing, energy-emitting entities that we see are proof that energy is at work in some form. The best way of detecting the presence of ghosts is through an EMF meter.
Their readings and electrical charges are so strong that they are easily detected and can disrupt electrical equipment. This works with this idea of plasma because of that highly-energized, ionized gas.
Plasma has the ability to conduct electricity, generate electromagnetic fields and emit light.
Ghosts and other related manifestations are known to do the same. There is a glow to them.
It was once theorized that ghosts were simply light sources of photon element, but this did not explain the ability to pass through solid objects.
In order to do this, these ghosts had to be made of something smaller than an atom. There was also the theory of the “ghost particle” that is the neutrino – something small enough to meet this criteria.
The problem here was that neutrinos don’t carry an electrical charge.
So What Are Ghosts Made of?
The one thing that researchers can be sure about is that ghosts are made up of some form of strong energy source.
It now seems that theories about photon light were a long way off the mark.
At the time, they were the most logical explanation for light generation in an unknown entity, but it seems that we were not looking far enough.
The poorly-understood world of plasma surely holds the key to finally answering the question of what ghosts are really made of.
Further research into the properties of plasma and the potential for different forms could help us to sole this puzzle.
How much do you know about the supernatural and paranormal activities?
The first step towards ever getting anywhere with the truth behind many mysteries is definitely understanding the paranormal components.
What makes up the weird and the unexplained of human society?
We can begin by defining any paranormal or supernatural phenomena as a mystical manifestation or event that human beings cannot conclusively explain using all our advanced scientific knowledge and natural elements.
These include occurrences like cryptids, superhuman abilities like telekinesis and of course, ghosts and aliens.
The Paranormal Breakdown: A Foundation to the Truth
Care to find out the categories of weird we have in the world…?
It’s the only sensible way to get to the ultimate truth right?
The supernatural world has general reports of all the following mysterious phenomena…
1) Legends and Mythologies
Here you will find well-known fairy-tale creatures the likes of deities (Zeus, Ra, Apollo…), werewolves, mermaids, and demigods like Hercules, blood suckers like Dracula, the bogeyman and even trolls or gargoyles.
All the characters above were used in different societies and cultures across the world as part of their unique folklore to pass teachings and warnings and also try to explain things they could not yet begin to comprehend.
These supernatural characters were developed and preserved over centuries of passed on oral narrations from generations to generations.
2) Demons and Possessions
This falls under a branch of theology known as demonology; which is basically a study into the belief of demons and evil spirits.
Many confuse this with the study of cults but it’s far from it. However, elements of demons and their references can be found throughout all major religions and forms of belief.
Demons can either be benevolent or malevolent but many people tend to associate the name “demon” with the latter. This is because are mostly perceived as wicked and vindictive.
Controversial demonologists like Lorraine Warren have claimed to be able to talk to ghosts and demons.
Famous texts such as the Grimoire of Pope Honorius gave most of the names of demons we know of today as well as their individual functions.
Some of these earlier religious inclined texts have met strong resistance and brushed aside as diabolical and baseless facts.
Ghost hunting groups and individuals on the other hand have stuck to the idea that demons are just pissed off ghosts that decide to act evil…
How many demons can you name in addition to Nybbas, Seraphim, Abaddon, Pharzuph, Gaap, Abdiel, Krampus, or the king of Hell’s comedy, Kobal?
Each demon is believed to control a particular element and have different influences in the material world.
The common belief of course being that these demons are merely the devil’s minions. Some even believe that demons can possess human beings or animals and influence their actions and thoughts.
3) Aliens and UFOs
The question still lingers as to whether earth has had contact with extraterrestrial beings or not.
The existence of life outside our atmosphere has always fascinated us, and efforts are still underway to make the first contact despite there being numerous claims of several UFO sightings and alien contact(s).
Although all these allegations about interactions with beings from other planets and possibly distant galaxies have been questionable, there have been very interesting conspiracies tied to governments such as the New Mexico Roswell UFO crash.
Other unproven stories have described vivid alien abductions that have left us torn between what to believe and not to believe about the alien/UFO controversy.
4) The Metaphysical Element
This falls under a branch of science known as pseudoscience. These are claims and concepts without any scientific legitimacy and which are better referred to as alternative or fringe science.
Some of the phenomena categorized as metaphysical include:
* Telepathy: Communication using brain waves or transmitting thoughts without verbal words.
* Chakras: Any of the 7 spiritual power points in a human being. They are scattered in different locations between the top of the head and somewhere near your mid-section around the pelvis area.
* ESP (6th sense) and Clairvoyance: This is basically the ability to perceive or experience events outside the scope covered by our natural 5 senses.
* Auras: This is the belief that a human being is surrounded by a colorful array of energy fields every now and then. Kind of like the magnetic fields depicted on a magnet.
* Telekinesis: This is where objects can be moved without any physical interference. It is believed the mind has the ability to summon this kind of power in some super-humans or supernatural beings.
* Reincarnation: This is the rebirth of a soul into another body…not necessarily a human body.
* Astrology: This is basically a study into the influences or effects that astral bodies such as planets have on the experiences of human beings. Thus the development of the Zodiac signs, their meanings, and how each is related to certain individuals in terms of influencing life events.
5) The Study of Cryptids or Cryptozoology
This side of the paranormal looks at animals not yet categorized in science; which of course goes to tell you that their existence at any point in the earth’s history is highly contentious.
These are studies about Bigfoot, Pegasus, the Loch Ness monster, Unicorns, Dragons, the goat sucking Chupacabra and many more.
6) Ghosts: Living Spirits of the Dead
Okay, truth be told…this is arguably the beginning of the journey into the paranormal. Stories of souls or human spirits from beyond the light visiting the land of the living go back as far back as death itself!
The fascination with death has driven man to great heights and sometimes to very, very low depths in search of the elusive answer…What happens to a person after death?
Is it all gone?
Is the soul detached from the body and promoted to a higher realm?
And what about these claims of people who died and came back? What did they really see on the other side?
The only way to find out the true answer to this quagmire is simple but a bitter pill to swallow because nobody wants to die…
But wait…it gets even more interesting…parapsychology seems to hold a different theory about ghosts.
Studies in this field tend to bend heavily towards the possibility of communicating with ghosts through mediums.
The twist here is that the theory also suggests that living humans disembodied through astral project can very easily appear to other people as ghosts.
Hauntings: Lingering Paranormal Energies
These paranormal activities are usually connected to certain places. Contrary to what you might have believed, hauntings don’t necessarily have to be connected to ghosts according to TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society)…!
Here’s a breakdown of the kinds of hauntings you can encounter in the paranormal world…
#1 Intelligent Ghost Activity: This is basically where ghosts or unseen entities can be experienced as they struggle to make contact with the land of the living. Think messages written on a misty mirror…
#2 Poltergeist Hauntings: These are violent events such as banging doors or flying objects; total chaos and mayhem from unseen energies.
Poltergeist energies are also believed to attach themselves to individuals and cause unusual drama everywhere these people go.
More contradictory views seem to believe different about the source of poltergeists.
Parapsychologist view of the poltergeist suggest that this is the work of an oblivious living human being who in some unknown way manages to summon up and manifest some sort of psychokinetic energy.
But, why the violence and the terrifying events?
#3 Residual Haunting: This is more like “déjà vu haunting”…okay, think living through an episode of the TV series Day Break…the same event occurring over and over again at certain intervals.
Parting Shot: Searching for the Truth
The truth can only be established when we move from the known to the unknown…Working with the few paranormal facts we have brings us closer to understanding the paranormal and what goes on in realms we can’t see or we can scarcely fathom.
Hope this small guide helps you move closer to your own truth… keep the faith and have fun sharing experiences from the paranormal or supernatural world.
What happens when a highly spiritual man of the cloth is unceremoniously stripped off his religious robes and disgracefully hanged to death for rape and murder?
Maybe the Pontefract Ghost House story can help us answer this question…
So what’s the deal with the Pontefract Black Monk haunting at the famous house on 30 East Drive?
And why is this ghost considered one of the most violent ghosts in the history of Europe?
It all started way back in 1633, when King Henry (VIII) was at the throne. It is said that a priest by the name of Carl Anthony succumbed to the desires of the flesh and raped a young village girl.
To cover his tracks, he killed her.
He was however found guilty and hanged to the death at the gallows that are believed to have been located somewhere near this haunted semi-detached terrace house in East Yorkshire.
So…why the extreme violence from this unfriendly ghost that writer Tom Cuniff calls the “Black Monk of Pontefract”…?
Nobody knows for sure but your guess is as good as any.
Maybe the monk still feels angry for not being strong enough to say no to his bodily urges…maybe it’s because he was framed or maybe it’s due to the fact that his sins imprisoned his soul on earth instead of transitioning to heavenly glory…but one thing is for sure though, he’s no Casper!
Evidence From Real-Life Accounts:
The first ever recorded incident with the angry ghost was in the sixties, just after the Pritchards moved into the house on 30 East Drive.
The story goes that it was the grandmother, Sarah, who had the first encounter with the Black Monk while babysitting Philip.
The old woman almost jumped out of her skin when pools of water started forming on the floor and stuff started flying out the cupboards and off the shelves and smashed into the walls.
It is reported that a later investigation by the water board did not find any leaks or faulty pipes at all!
Things got even weirder during an incident when white chalk started falling from the air! Mrs. Kelly (Philip’s aunt) and Philip himself confirmed seeing pools of water form on the floor in front of their naked eyes!
There were more incidents after that and the paranormal activities became so regular that the Pritchards finally had a nickname for our ghost.
They called him “Fred”.
The poltergeist continued to throw things around, slashing framed hanged photos with a knife and even slapped a few people after the Pritchards attempted an exorcism in 1968.
It’s also important to note at this point that this ghost later seemed to shift all its attention on Diane Pritchard…and maybe for reasons relating to why this troublesome spirit was still roaming the world of the living; the 16th-century execution of a promiscuous monk.
The British flick is based on Poltergeist, a 1981 book by Colin Wilson. The cast included Craig Parkinson, Kate Ashfield, Jo Hartley, Steven Waddington and others…
A news reporter working for a local newspaper, Andy Lea also wrote a piece on the increased paranormal activity in the Pontefract house immediately after the release of the movie.
The article reported that one of the neighbors had carried a successful séance and managed to have a chat with the Black Monk ghost.
This was after she (Carol Fieldhouse) had observed the TV blasting out from the empty house one evening.
More Video Evidence…
Recent investigations into the Black Monk of Pontefract haunting carried out by several ghost hunting groups revealed some pretty amazing facts and a glimpse into the world of scary spirits.
One such video evidence was captured by the Most Haunted TV series crew in a live Halloween special.
They fitted the entire house with cameras and other ghost hunting equipment and allowed viewers to watch everything as it happened in real time.
“Fred” did not disappoint his fans either…a voice was recorded ordering the crew to quickly GET OUT as things started moving slowly…right in the eyes of live viewers watching with their mouths wide open!
There were also some few clear knocks and more whispers that nobody could make out.
The house is now open to the public and anybody in search of some real terrifying experiences can make their way to East Yorkshire and on to the house on 30 East Drive, Pontefract.
Care to find out if the Pontefract Ghost House story is real?
Dead at age 42 of an apparent heart attack, Elvis Presley was one of, if not the most revolutionary and impacting artists of his time.
He died in Graceland, Memphis, triggering the shock and lamentation of his millions of fans. Elvis was buried in Graceland as well.
However, hundreds of testimonies and claims seem to suggest that the death of the star was not the end of his journey.
Elvis Presley ghost sightings throughout the United States propose that the legendary King of Rock and Roll continues to live on, periodically visiting his favorite locations as he did touring around the country when he was alive.
In fact, Elvis is reportedly one of the most significantly spotted celebrity ghosts…
His Hometown of Graceland, Memphis
Elvis resided in Graceland preceding his death in 1977. Elvis was, evidently, the happiest while he was living in Graceland.
Several sources have reported seeing his ghost standing near his grave or looking out of windows. In addition, there are multiple reports of people feeling his presence in his Graceland mansion – in particular, in the kitchen.
Pictures have also been taken there depicting his face in curtains and windows, visitors to Graceland have also reported hearing Elvis singing.
Interestingly, some claim seeing a younger Elvis in Memphis – Elvis is often seen as his younger ‘soldier self’ wandering around Graceland.
Those touring through his home have reported seeing this many times, at first thinking it to be an actor or impersonator but later discovering that it was not.
His mother, whom Elvis had a great relationship with, is also allegedly seen around Graceland. Also, there have been incidences of poltergeist activity within Graceland – footsteps, toilets flushing, doors opening and closing.
And finally, perhaps the strangest sighting of the King’s ghost, actress Paz de la Heurta insists that he gave her an orgasm while she was visiting the recording studio of his home!
The Venue of The Las Vegas Hilton & Hollywood
The Hilton was the location of Elvis’ very last performance in 1976. The nightclub was one of his most notorious venues, and was consistently sold out and packed every time he performed.
His ghost has been spotted in multiple areas of the hotel, especially his old penthouse suite. He has also been seen in the basement and the elevator.
When spotted in the Hilton, witnesses describe him wearing his typical outfit: a white rhinestone-studded suit.
Las Vegas sightings of Elvis are particularly high nearing his birthday and the date of his death, and a few have also claimed to have seen him driving along the Strip in a vintage red Cadillac.
Those who see him usually assume he’s an impersonator (it’s Vegas, it’s realistic to assume) until describing that if they continued looking or tried to speak with him, his apparition would disappear.
While definitely one of the lesser discussed locations of supposed hauntings by the singer, Hollywood elaborates to being visited by Elvis as well, a man who made over 40 films there in his lifetime.
He often stayed in the Knickerbocker Hotel which he used as a photo-shoot space for Heartbreak Hotel.
The room he stayed in while he was there has reportedly fallen prey to paranormal activity as well, mainly the temperature of the room dropping to strangely low temperatures at random intervals and technological issues.
RCA Recording Studio of Nashville
Since Elvis’ death, the RCA Recording Studio has long been demolished. There, he recorded his first single: Heartbreak Hotel, a monumental song with chilling lyrics – interestingly enough, the writer of the song mentioned that the inspiration of the song had been the words of a suicide note.
There have been many reports of ghost activity, inherently claimed to be Elvis, haunting the location where his career kicked off.
Unexplainable occurrences have happened there – lights suddenly go out, noises, bang, and footsteps seem to come from nowhere, and things fall randomly.
Today, the rooms of the old recording studio are utilized for television production. Workers have publicly stated that simply by saying the King’s name, strange things will immediately start to happen.
Several workers, in addition, say that they have observed his ghost.
A Legend Lives On
While Elvis may not be touring around America doing concerts anymore, he has undoubtedly found a way to continue touring around America and surprising us from the other side.
As he was in life, in death he continues to be spontaneous, lively, and unpredictable. In this way, the several Elvis Presley ghost sightings suggest that the King will never truly die – he and his spirit live on.
If you see Lorraine Warren today, you’ll probably see a frail 89 year old woman but looks can be deceiving! Back in day, Lorraine and Edward Warren were what you’d call the “Bonny and Clyde” of ghost busting.
You’d have to be from another dimension if you haven’t heard of the Ed and Lorraine Warren cases.
The couple’s profound interest in the supernatural led to the establishment of a ghost hunting team and an organization called the “NESPR (New England Society for Psychic Research)” which began in 1952.
The NESPR has and still is a big part of America’s history and involvement with the underworld.
The Paranormal Pair
These two were literally a match made in heaven to uncover hell! Staunch Catholics; self proclaimed demonologist and medium (clairvoyant – light trance), the perfect recipe for something very, very unnatural.
And let’s not forget that Ed served in World War II and again as a cop. We all know what happens with guys who’ve been to overseas war right? …the PSTD?
Probably one of the reasons why the ghost hunting duo has so many critics. Their fascinating stories and adventures during their ghost hunting days have also created a massive following too.
Some of their real life cases have been adapted into hair raising horror movies and blood chilling books.
With an impressive 10, 000 paranormal investigation cases under their belt(s), it’s no wonder Hollywood came knocking on their door to borrow their diaries to develop scripts.
Some of the most notable encounters with the supernatural which started in 1970 include (not in chronological order):
The White Lady of Union Cemetery – This was a case where Ed claims to have captured the essence of the ghostly lady on camera during an investigation following reports of the cemetery being haunted. He later wrote a book about it which was published in 1992.
The Annabelle Doll Mystery – The story goes that two roommates discovered that their doll (an old raggedy Ann doll) was possessed by a demon going by the name of Annabelle.
The couple is said to have confirmed the doll’s possession by an unearthly spirit and actually took it and included it as one of their prized collections in their backyard “Occult Museum”.
The Controversial Amityville Haunting – Now this is one story that has stirred up a lot of talk and people still continue to throw shadows of doubt on this famous couple based on this particular case.
Okay, the case went on to attract a few negative public reviews plus a couple of lawsuits in a bid to uncover the truth about the whole Lutz family haunted house saga.
A book published in 1977 and written by Jay Anson titled The Amityville Haunting is one of the many ways the Ed and Lorraine legend has been kept alive.
The haunted house tale is said to have been started by two sisters (11 and 13) when they told their mother of strange knocking on walls and moving furniture. See why it’s so easy to doubt it?
More ghost stories include the werewolf demon case, the demo possessed murderer, the witch haunting the Perron family and Smurl family haunting among others.
Some of the infamous cases like the Amityville case, the possessed doll (Annabelle) and the Perron family house haunting have been adapted in Hollywood movies.
Going by the large number of divided believers and skeptics, it’s extremely hard to tell whether the Ed and Lorraine duo really encountered any real ghosts during their ghost hunting career.
The fact however is that they used many credible factions in their investigations and this included members of the clergy, law enforcement and other professionals (notable figures) in the field of supernatural happenings.
This to some extent throws a little weight behind their bizarre claims and collected “evidence” over the years.
We wonder if the late Ed still calls in to check on his wife from the “other side”…..now that, would be some interesting headline!
We are still waiting for someone to come up with concrete proof that these two actually met some real ghosts or if they helped people get out of their haunted situations. We are not saying that the Ed and Lorraine cases are a hoax and neither do we say that we believe them but… yeah, there’s a but there.
The opposing sides (believers and skeptics) almost match each other in terms of the following which is the number one reason we are letting you have the final word on this matter.
After a remake of the Steven Spielberg 1982 classic horror movie Poltergeist, was released in 2015 it got people talking again about the apparent curse surrounding the original.
Although there were no nasty incidents reported following the new movie, many fans will remember the series of petrifying events that unfolded after the earlier production was released.
This included the untimely deaths of 5 cast members, and many people believe that it is the most cursed franchise to ever come out of Hollywood.
But is the Poltergeist movie curse really a “curse”, or just a series of unfortunate coincidences?
Let’s take a closer look and you can decide for yourself what you believe!
The trilogy is the chilling tale of a normal family haunted by an evil poltergeist after moving into their new home.
Strange things begin to happen around their young daughter Carol Ann, who becomes a conduit for the supernatural occurrences.
Where It All Started
Speculation about a curse began after the brutal murder of beautiful actress Dominique Dunne who was just 22 years old.
She played Dana (the older sister of Carol Ann) in the movie. She was strangled by an abusive ex boyfriend, and died 5 days later when taken off life support.
The Secret Behind The Curse?
Some people speculate that perhaps the film is cursed because it used actual human skeletons. In one famous scene, the character Diane (played by JoBeth McWilliams) falls in the family pool and terrifyingly it is full of skeletons.
This was a scene that took 4-5 days to shoot.
At the time the cast and crew were unaware that they were real human skeletons and in fact thought they were made from plastic or rubber.
Of course they soon found out the truth, but could that really be the reason for the series of events that ensued?
Could it really be the reason that so many people lost their lives in unexpected circumstances?
Why then did the actress who actually ended up in the pool with the skeletons not fall foul of the curse?
Today age 67, JoBeth McWilliams is still alive and well. And why would certain cast members be affected when they had nothing to do with the decision to use human skeletons?
Many people believe that the fact the human remains were disturbed, and used in this manner caused a curse to fall on the movie and those involved.
Two More Deaths Followed The Sequel
On the set of the 2nd movie in the trilogy, Native American actor Will Sampson, conducted an exorcism after concern about the use of real human skeletons in the making of the first film.
However two more cast members met an untimely demise within a few short years of the sequel release.
Actor Julian Beck got stomach cancer and died at the age of 60, and Will Sampson himself (the man who performed the exorcism), died at just 53 from complications following an operation.
While these are not particularly suspicious sounding deaths, many people believe they are linked to a curse on the trilogy.
Death of Heather O’Rourke
Just after finishing filming the third and final chapter of the original Poltergeist, and several months before its release in 1988, child star Heather O’Rourke died age 12.
Heather played Carol Ann, the child in the movie who was targeted by the supernatural entities. Cause of death was septic shock and cardiac arrest related to a misdiagnosed intestinal problem.
Her death at such a young age is often cited as one of the most convincing cases for a curse.
Other events include cast member Richard Lawson who was aboard a US plane that crashed in March 1992. The actor survived, but 27 of the 51 passengers on board were killed.
In 2009, Lou Perryman, who had a small part in the original Poltergeist, was killed at home by an ex convict who had recently been released. Just two more incidents that prompt the belief in a curse.
The reality is that even today, we understand very little about the supernatural and the paranormal. Many people believe that there are consequences involved when messing about with the paranormal or dark topics such as that in Poltergeist.
Is it really a curse or are the illnesses and deaths just a tragic coincidence?
Nobody knows for certain.
Whether or not you believe in the Poltergeist movie curse is up to you, however there’s no denying that the terrible events surrounding this famous trilogy are extremely creepy and certainly seem like more than just a typical coincidence.
Mention room 428 in Ohio University to any alumni or current resident of Wilson Hall dormitory; you’re guaranteed a ghost story.
Ohio University is considered one of the most haunted schools in the world.
Built only one year after Ohio established statehood, Ohio University’s walls have witnessed plenty of tragedy.
It all started in the 1970’s when a student lost their life. Accounts differ when it comes to the gender of the student, but sources agree on the unexpected or unusual nature of the death.
Some time after that, however, a female student lived in the dorm. Those who knew the woman claimed that she studied the occult. She allegedly used the energy of the room to speak with the dead.
Forgotten over the course of decades, her name does not seem to be known. Yet, nearly every story about this woman ends in her grisly death.
It is said that she drew on the power of the room one night. She wanted to astral project or speak with the dead, but somehow this resulted in her violent and bloody death. Some stories say that she slit her wrists. However, this is not a widely circulated claim.
An Array of Supernatural Phenomenon
After the first death in the 1970’s, students experienced an array of supernatural phenomenon. Frequently, students occupying the room alone would hear footsteps.
Other times, objects would fly across the room and shatter against the walls. And still other accounts claim to have seen the ghost of the ill-fated occult follower.
But why did the first death in Room 428 occur at all?
It is interesting to note that Wilson Hall sits in the center of five prominent cemeteries. When these sites are connected with a marker on a map, they form a pentagram.
A pentagram is not an inherently evil symbol. It symbolizes the five elements or the God and Goddess of the Wicca religion. It’s considered a talisman of strength or protection from which one may draw or amplify energy.
To be located in the center of a pentagram, as is the case with Wilson Hall, is a potent sign that the site is one of great importance. In the occult, it is similar to a building that resides upon crossing ley lines.
Another fascinating theory for the paranormal activity in Room 428: Wilson Hall rests on a cemetery. Sources differ on whether this cemetery held the corpses of Native Americans or those of the Athens Mental Institute.
Regardless, everyone seems to agree that the dorm is directly atop a graveyard.
On January 9th, 1874, the Mental Medical Center (then called the Athens Lunatic Asylum) first opened its doors. All was as well as it could be in a mental ward at that time.
For many years, the patients of the institute enjoyed a peaceful atmosphere complete with fountains and gardens.
As the asylum gradually became overran with patients, the quality of the institution plummeted into the dark ages. The doctors and staff grew cold and temperamental with their charges.
Difficult or unruly patients were punished with icy cold dunks in tubs of water; electroshock therapies became the norm.
The most wild or unmanageable patients underwent a procedure called a lobotomy, permanently destroying their already broken or misfiring minds.
All of these phenomena are said to contribute to the mysterious death of the unknown student of Room 428 in Ohio University back in the 1970’s.
Several spiritualist experts have conducted investigations of the area. They determined that the geographical layout surrounding Ohio University (such as the outlying valleys, peaks, and mountains) served to conduct spiritual energy.
The state of Ohio in general is known to be an epicenter of paranormal activity and hauntings, actually.
Today, Room 428 in Ohio University is sealed off from students. This happened shortly after the death of the woman who practiced the occult.
However, the door of the room is said to depict the face of a demon, even after the entire thing is replaced. The students currently residing in Wilson Hall are curious, as expected.
Some confess that, as Halloween approaches, their RA’s allow them to “tour” the room. And when they open the door and step into Room 428, each student unanimously reports…
…a couple of dead birds. Oh, well. There’s still the constant complaints of someone walking around in the room from those living in the adjacent dorms!
