The Lord Combermere Ghost Photo

The Lord Combermere Ghost Photo

This article will be taking a look at the image snapped in Combermere Abbey Library in Cheshire, England, in 1891 – frequently referred to as the Lord Combermere ghost photo.

Has this photograph managed to capture the ghost of Combermere, who’s funeral was taking place at the time the image was taken?

Let’s take a closer look…

The Image

The now famous paranormal photograph was taken by Sybell Corbet, sister of Lady Combermere, in 1891. It shows a scene from the Combermere Abbey’s library.

Lord Combermere had died a few days before the photo was taken, when he was tragically hit and killed by a horse drawn carriage.

The Funeral

The photograph was taken when his funeral taking place several miles away. The location was near enough deserted due to his family and his servants attending the event.

His sister, Corbet, had set up the camera and took an hour long exposure.

When she finally managed to get the image developed (it took a while in those days!) she was more than surprised to see the image of an aging man sitting in the lord’s favorite chair.

She showed the photograph to the other family members, and Combermere’s staff…and they all agreed that the man in the chair bore an amazing resemblance to the late lord.

Skeptics immediately jumped on the case – there was apparently no way this could be a paranormal image.

Most of them put forward the theory that the image was of one of the male staff, that stayed behind to watch the property on the day of the funeral.

This theory was instantly refuted as all the male staff were young and were also warned that the photo was being taken (i.e. they were not to enter the room!).

No it’s over to you – do you think that this is a real paranormal photograph?

  1. Once again I have to say that I love your posts. It’s fun to get a little dose of mystery and possibly even fear every once in a while. Now on to your question. I would have to say that I don’t believe it’s an actual paranormal photograph. The reason for that is because it was an hour long exposure, anyone could have walked into the room and walked out and left a ghostly image on the film. I’ve done it with long exposure’s myself. Beside’s that you can’t even see the features of the ghosts face, let alone tell if it’s an older man or a young man.

Anyway, that’s just my opinion. And I’ve been known to be wrong before. It certainly would be spooky if it really was a ghosts photograph!

    1. No problem Mariah – that’s a decent opinion at the end of the day!

You are right, it was a long exposure and anyone could have slipped into the room etc.

  2. What an interesting article.  At the end of the day I guess its whether or not you are a believer.  Personally myself I am a believer and on more than one occasion I know I have seen a ghost.  That proves like wise for my wife as well.

I dont mind people not believing.  After all that is there right but I don’t like being judged because I do believe.

Thank you for taking the time to write such an interesting article. I cant wait to read more from you.

  3. I have always been fascinated by Paranormal activities and old black and white photos. I really do not know if it is real or not, one side of me would want to make me believe it is, …the more skeptical says it could all be a Photo shop effect; nowadays it is so difficult to distinguish. But I guess I am gonna stay with the first version; it is much more fascinating. Do you have more pictures like this one?

    1. Hi Barbara,

Yes we do – do a simple search through the archives of our site and you’ll see a load of images covered in articles there!

  4. This is so interesting. I’ve been quite interested in ghosts since I was a young girl, but also in a position where I felt too fearful to look into it too much! I guess I’m not sure if the photograph is his ghost or not, but I’d be inclined to say it was. It does not look like it could be a live person; it’s not defined enough. But I don’t know enough about photography in those days, either.

  5. Personally, I see an image  sitting in the chair from the waist up. I don’t know if this qualifies as a paranormal image or not as it is not very clear. Plus it is an old black and white photo. Makes one want to explore more about this topic. I find it very intriguing.

  6. Hello there!

    Very intersting post and website!

I don’t know what to think about it. The thing that amazes me the most is that all those photos with possible ghosts, monsters or aliens are old and unclear.

Today we have the possibility to take pictures whenever we want to, but still we don’t see those “creatures” in pictures anymore. This brings me a question: Why? Maybe all those ghosts are only spots or something, seen that the photos used to have low resolution and poor quality. What do you think?

    1. Seriously Anna? You don’t see any of these types of pictures any longer?

They’re all over the internet, except now unfortunately, a high percentage of them are faked through Photoshop!

  7. I do believe its a paranormal photograph, I mean this photograph was taken in 1891, at Combermere Abbey library in England and at that time the modern day tech was not available for some to say it was manipulated

I have no doubt it is a paranormal photograph because anything is possible.
