Aleister Crowley Documentary

I actually remember watching this documentary on Channel 4 (in the UK) when it first aired years ago – when I found it on YouTube I just had to include it here!

The full title of the documentary is Aleister Crowley – The Most Wicked Man In The World.

Who Was Aleister Crowley?

Born in 1875, Aleister Crowley decided to concentrate on rebelling against his regulated ‘small-town’ background. His childhood years were spent in Leamington, Warwickshire, where he was raised by parents who were members of an extremely Strict Brethren ( a fundamentalist Christian sect ).

As a child his father frequently read passages of the bible to him but Crowley seemed to identify with the enemies of God rather than the characters bathed in light.

In particular he identified with the antichrist predicted in the book of Revelation.

Aleister’s lifestyle was considered completely shocking in the era in which he lived. Besides his interest in the occult, he had a sexual interest in both genders (throughout a time when homosexuality was completely illegal in Britain), constantly made use of prostitutes, was totally defiant against Christianity and Victorian and post-Victorian prudishness toward the subject of sex, and was also a known drug addict.

His religious beliefs and the acts he performed in their name led to him being dubbed the “Wickedest Man in the World” by the press.

In 1907, Crowley and George Cecil Jones co-founded a Thelemite order, the A∴A∴, through which they propagated the religion.

in 1912 he jumped into another esoteric order, the German-based Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.), rising to become the leader of its UK branch.

Within months of taking the leadership he decided to reformulate this new religion in accordance with his Thelemite beliefs.

I could go on and on about this unique man’s story but I feel the documentary above above will do a much better job than I ever can.

Besides…how many of you actually bother to read these blurbs underneath each documentary??? 🙂

  1. Oooh – I love a scary story, a good horror film or a conspiracy theory. Anything that makes you wonder a bit! This was a great watch and I completely understand why at the time this was considered wicked. Isn’t it amazing how society moves on, and some of this is now quite acceptable? Maybe not the religious beliefs, but certainly some of the behaviors. I’m sure he felt he made the most of his life, enjoying the vices of the times!

    1. Yeah he’s a difficult one to figure out isn’t he Mara – some of the things he did were quite awful but he sort of had an interest – he wasn’t aiming to hurt people (in my humble opinion). I always get the feeling he was just super-curious.

  2. Maybe I’m the only one but I think this man is very ambitious. Despite his views he went against the norm and founded his own religion! That’s crazy. Maybe not what you are supposed to take out of it but you gotta respect the guy for that!

And I’ll have you know Chris that I read your blurb under the story :).

    1. LOL cheers Matt – you’re probably the first one to actually read it! I agree – the guy was certainly ahead of his time, but unfortunately he did more than a few bad things…
